Fellow kitties and furry friends alike, legs were swept this week…and not just once, but twice!
Let’s start with the unlikely rivalry that developed this clay court season between King of Clay, Rafa Nadal and “Sweep the Leg” Dominic Thiem. For the third time this year, Thiem met Rafa, but this time it was in the quarterfinals at the Rome Masters. It was like a new and improved Thiem showed up on court because he was relentless against Nadal. His one handed back hand was powerful and quick, like the snap of a rubber band, and burned across the court. It was two quick sets, 6-4, 6-3. Unbelievable!
Dominic was taken out by a fierce, rare (for this year) dominant semifinal match against Novak Djokovic. I thought this was Novak’s “come back kid” moment, however, he was met by another weird headband wielding, 20 year old “Next Gen” player, Sascha Zverev at the final.
Here’s how this match went:
Me: Sweep the leg, Sascha! Sweep the leg!
Sascha: OK Frazier, watch this!
And that’s all she wrote! Sweeeeeep! 6-4, 6-3, and that’s that! His first Masters Title. Yay Sascha!
These wins set up the two Karate Kid villains for a fine showing at the French Open next week. I am super excited to see how this story ends!
